Program: We Rock the Mic

Partner Organization: The Mix at Arbor Place

Grant: $5,000 Ah-Ha Seed Fund

This spring we had the opportunity to partner with The Mix at Arbor Place- an after-school program for Lancaster City youth- to create an innovative youth leadership initiative called “We Rock The Mic.”  We Rock the Mic is the center’s first spoken word poetry program.  Three times a week, a group of middle school and high school students come together to write and perform their own poetry- gaining knowledge of literature, the poetic form, self-expression and developing positive leadership skills. The students then perform in “poetry slams” to voice their opinions and gain confidence speaking in front of a group.

Supported by our Ah-Ha Seed Fund, specifically for empowering youth and young adults to develop leadership skills- we’ve been excited to see these students tackling big issues like faith, imperfection, and dreams- while also having fun and serving as role models for younger students at Arbor Place. The group hopes to attend the National Youth Poetry Slam in Philadelphia this summer, and has already engaged students from their music production program, “ReMixed Studio,” to record poetry and practice mixing it with beats.

See the students in action with a practice poetry slam!
