Announcing 2016 Field of Interest Grant Investments

Second Cycle Grant Investments:

Field of Interest & Capacity Building

Sixteen organizations implementing 18 programs will receive a total of $242,000 dollars through Field of Interest and Capacity Building grants. These grants will support a range of programs including Lancaster Urban Farming initiative, community health advocates, and enhanced work training programs.Trained community volunteers and staff review grant proposals and recommend grants to the Community Foundation Board of Directors who ultimately approve the investments.

ADA F. HARR FUND for home health or custodial care
SouthEast Lancaster Health Services $31,000
SouthEast’s Community Health Worker will work with individuals experiencing barriers like language or poverty to care by offering in-home medication monitoring, health education, and support that helps patients to manage diabetes and/or hypertension, and to access high quality care.

ANNE C. & W. FRANKLIN RESSLER FUND for Eastern Lancaster County
Lancaster County Conservancy $5,900
Enhancements, ADA fulfillment, and continued preservation of the 900 acre Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve.

Thaddeus Stevens Foundation $20,000
To help meet Lancaster County’s shortage of skilled welders, Thaddeus Stevens College is increasing capacity to enroll students in welding courses creating a new 9-month certificate in Welding, and developing a new stand-alone Welding associate degree program.

BETTER LANCASTER FUND for early childhood development
Fulton Opera House Foundation $10,000
Building Bridges is a comprehensive arts education program for preschoolers (3-5 years) built around a curriculum of storytelling and dramatic play that contributes to the learning of critical literacy
skills, expanded expressiveness and creativity, and social and emotional growth vital to school readiness. Bridges is offered to early learning centers serving multicultural families living at or below poverty level.

Library System of Lancaster County $14,300
Enhance the children’s book collections at each of our county’s nineteen public libraries.

FLORENCE STARR TAYLOR FUND for visual arts
Friendship Community $13,000
Support for the Friendship Heart Gallery which empowers individuals who have a developmental disability to grow artistically while they attend art classes, earn a commission and collaborate with professional artists.

LANCASTER ENVIRONMENTAL FUND

Lancaster County Conservancy $16,050
Lancaster County Conservancy will preserve and enhance 43.85 acres of at risk contiguous forest with 2 springs, 2 seeps, and a stream adjacent to LCC’s Steinman Run Nature Preserve.

Lancaster Farmland Trust $16,050
Through its successful Smart Farms program, Lancaster Farmland Trust will launch an innovative bee-friendly farming initiative to provide education, outreach and assistance to farmers about practices that will restore and sustain bee health.

PATRICK KENNEY, JR. and K.L. SHIRK FUND for human relations
Community Action Program $13,000
The Block CAPtains program will identify, empower, and pay local community members to organize events and forums, and create community-based solutions to issues like crime prevention and neighborhood clean-up.

SAM & VERDA TAYLOR FUND for performing arts

Millersville University Office of Visual and Performing Arts $7,700
Supporting a multi-faceted program providing exceptional diversified arts and arts-learning experiences to young people from all walks of life, enhancing their aesthetic, cognitive, social, and emotional growth, and giving them the opportunity to become full participants in the cultural life of our community.

Music for Everyone $20,000
Providing the School District of Lancaster with the nationally award-winning music education program that is strengthened by a cadre of professional Artist Mentors and college student interns who work directly with teachers in schools year-round.

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM
The Capacity Building Program supports programs that build an organization’s capacity to fulfill its mission through activities such as: strategic planning, board development, succession planning, marketing/branding planning, and development planning.
