Girls on the Run- Empowering Girls As Leaders

Girls on the Run

Supported with $5,000 from the Ah-Ha Seed Fund

Girls on the Run is a character development program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade designed to help girls break out of the “girl box.” Young girls work with volunteer coaches to develop confident, healthy attitudes and self-esteem while creatively integrating running and a 5K event. Now the organization is looking to do more. In 2013, they are piloting a Junior Coaching Program for high school girls- allowing them to be actively involved in lessons and training as a mentor to younger girls while continuing to learn from adult coaches. “We want to bridge that gap. A lot happens in a young women’s life at that time,” says Girls on the Run executive director Carrie Johnson. The new program will allow girls of any demographic leadership opportunities and may include a Junior Board of Directors in the future. “We’re going to tap into what makes you feel strong, and encourage girls to want to be a part of giving back.”
